F-35 pilots have many ways to keep adversaries in the dark. We've listed just a few of the F-35’s unique, integrated capabilities below.
Night operations are an important aspect of mission readiness for the F-35. Learn how the most advanced 5th Gen fighter jet in the world thrives in the darkness:
- F-35 pilots an integrated, intuitive view of their surroundings. Advanced sensor fusion automatically analyzes data from the F-35’s sensors and merges it into relevant information for pilots, greatly enhancing survivability, effectiveness and interoperability.
- The F-35’s Distributed Aperture System surrounds pilots with relevant information. Six infrared cameras collect real-time imagery displayed in the F-35’s helmet, which has night-vision and fire control capabilities.
- The F-35’s helmet is one of the most advanced pieces of technology on the planet. A next generation interface gives F-35 pilots access to vast quantities of information and enables pilots to switch to night vision without additional equipment.
- The F-35’s targeting system is the first sensor to combine forward-looking infrared and infrared search and track functionality. The stealthy Electro-Optical Targeting System provides extended range detection and precision targeting against ground targets, and long-range detection of air-to-air threats.
- The F-35’s advanced radar is the most capable in the world. The AN/APG-81 AESA radar has long-range active and passive air-to-air and air-to-ground modes to support a full range of missions.
