850th Electro-Optical Targeting System Completed for F-35

Lockheed Martin’s Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS) is a key 5th Generation capability for the F-35 Lightning II that provides pilots with precision air-to-air and air-to-ground targeting functions. This system is the first of its kind – combining both forward-looking infrared and infrared search and track capabilities to enhance operator situational awareness, perform reconnaissance, and precisely deliver laser and GPS-guided weapons. All these operations can be completed while maintaining the aircraft’s stealth.

Recently, the F-35 Sensors team completed the 850th EOTS along with the final deliveries for F-35 Lot 13 production. This achievement comes at a time where the program is realizing a 98% stick rate and has consistently seen more than a 96% stick rate within the last year. A stick rate refers to the percentage of EOTS sensors that integrate into the F-35 without needing to be returned for repair.

"Completing the 850th EOTS for the F-35 while achieving the highest stick rate we’ve seen represents a great accomplish by our team members who all share in the same mission of supporting our warfighters,” said Brett Rolston, director of the F-35 Sensors program.

The F-35 Sensors program credits the milestone delivery and high stick rate to the quality of the product’s design, processes, and the dedication of the team across various Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control centers as well as throughout the supply chain.

Reducing the number of Defects Per Hour (DPH) has also played a role in the team’s successful delivery of the 850th EOTS. This not only represents the health of our production facilities, but also an improved cost savings for the program and, ultimately, F-35 production.

“The EOTS team continues to make strides in F-35 affordability,” said Bridget Lauderdale, vice president and general manager of the F-35 Program. “Since Low-Rate Initial Production 1, the EOTS team has reduced overall unit costs by 66%. I appreciate their focus on affordability and driving down costs.”
